Tiny House Hunting: My Unexpected Path to Ownership

From Dream to Reality: My Tiny House Journey

So, you want to know how I found my tiny house? Well, let me tell you, it wasn’t exactly a Pinterest-worthy journey of meticulously planned design. Honestly, I started by binge-watching YouTube videos and getting lost in the dreamy aesthetics of tiny house living.

Then reality hit. I started researching builders and was shocked by the quotes – $80,000 and up? At that price, I might as well buy a used RV! Determined to find a more affordable option, I stumbled upon Derksen Buildings. Now, I don’t know if you’ve heard of them, but they’re known for their high-quality sheds and buildings, all crafted by skilled Mennonite builders.

Intrigued, I delved deeper and discovered their financing program. Monthly payments? That sounded like a mortgage, but for a tiny house! I was ecstatic. I contacted them, outlining my budget – around $600 a month was all I could comfortably afford. After adding all the extras (and let’s be honest, I went a little overboard!), the monthly payment came to $545. A steal compared to traditional housing, right?

The downside? The interest rate meant I’d likely end up paying double the initial cost. But hey, even with that, it was still way more affordable than a conventional mortgage. In the end, my tiny house cost around $15,000, including some electrical upgrades I tackled myself.

So there you have it – my unexpected journey to tiny house ownership. It wasn’t the picture-perfect story I imagined, but it got me into my dream home. In my next post, I’ll share the unexpected hurdles I faced along the way, particularly dealing with local regulations. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t always easy, but with a little determination (and maybe a little luck), you can make it happen.
