My Homestead Has Wheels: A Journey of Faith, Dogs, and Helping Hands

Reimagining Self-Sufficiency as a Mobile Mission of Service

Okay, buckle up, because this is a bit of a pivot, and honestly, it feels right down to my soul. You know how my Catholic faith is everything to me? Well, lately, I’ve been wrestling with this homestead dream. I pictured myself with acres, a huge garden, the whole shebang. But the price of land these days… it’s been making me really pray and reconsider if that’s truly the path the Lord has laid out for me right now.

Then, last night at Mass, during that quiet time after Communion, it hit me. It wasn’t about staying put; it was about going. I felt this strong pull towards what Jesus told his disciples: be the light and salt of the earth. And suddenly, this whole new idea sparked in my heart.

Forget the fixed address for now. I’m thinking van life. Me, my dogs, and the open road. My homestead? It’s going to be wherever I park and whoever I meet. I want to find people who are already building their own homesteads, people who could use an extra pair of hands, some fresh energy. I want to show up, learn from them, and offer whatever skills I have.

It’s a different kind of homesteading, sure. Maybe not what everyone pictures. But isn’t that the point? Homesteading is about resourcefulness, community, and a certain way of living. And I think I can bring those values with me, wherever I go. It feels like a calling, a way to live out my faith in a real, tangible way. What do you think? Am I crazy, or could this actually work? I’m ready to hear your thoughts – good, bad, and everything in between.
